Teaching Procedures:

Step 1 Revision

Revise the future tense structure be going to. Ask the students to talk about What they are going to do next Sunday.

Step 2 Leading - in

Lead to the usage of present progressive and simple future tenses by asking students:

What are you doing now? ——We re having English class.

What are you going to do at weekend? ——I’m going to ….

Step 3 Ask and answer

Get the students to look at the picture and ask sb to work in pairs and talk about the picture, using present progressive tense.

Then let them ask and answer in pairs.

Ask the students to say a few sentences about the picture.

Call 3 - 5 students to the front of the class and make same actions, then ask a question “What am I doing?”

The other students answer, for example “You’re dancing/singing/reading/playing basketball /sweeping, etc.”

Step 3 Ask and answer

1.Ask students What are you going to do next Sunday?

Students answer: I’m going to …

2. Get students to look at the picture. Talk about the four pictures. Using present progressive and simple future tenses.

Do the first one with the class as a model.

What’s the woman doing?

She’s walking along a street, carrying a basket.

What’s she going to do?

She’s going to do some shopping.

Then have the students ask and answer in pairs. Check the answers with the whole class.

Step 4 Practise

Ask the students What they are doing. Making a plan for this Saturday and Sunday.

Then ask them to talk about their plans in the near future.   

Step 5 Consolidation

Help the students to summarize the usage of present progressive and simple future tense. And show some pictures to ask the students to talk about, using the two tenses that have just been learnt.

be (am, is, are)+doing

be (am, is, are) + going to do(plan to do sth. )

eg. I’m writing. Mary is sleeping. I’m going to have a holiday.

They re having an exam.

They’re going to Sichuan.

He’s going to give a report.

Complete the dialogue

1. Ask each student to find a picture with many people doing something, describe the picture, using present progressive tense and trying to use simple future tense.
