Lesson 46 is good for listening and reading. The title of lesson 46 The Universe And Man—made Satellites may make most students excited. The students will associate this lesson with scientific fictions, TV programme and cartoons. Therefore, we can induce students to love science and explore the universe by learning this passage.
Teaching objective.
1. Learn and grasp the following words and expressions
man-made, space, spaceship, so far, send up, with one’s help, programme, knowledge, develop.
2. Learn some knowledge about the universe and man-made satellites by way of watching slide pictures and listening to the tape.
3. Discuss why we say the world itself is becoming smaller and smaller.

Teaching procedure.
Step 1. Revision.
Get two Ss to perform a dialogue of asking the way to the science museum.
A: Hello! Good morning!
B: Good morning! What are you going to do this morning?
A: I’m going to visit the science museum. But I don’t’ know the way.
B: You can take No. 3 bus to the museum. As soon as you go through the entrance to Gate 2, you’ll find the real man-made satellite made in China in 1970.
Show the slides and say:
This is the science museum, you can see signs in it. (Entrance, Exit, No smoking, No photos)
Now, Let’s go into Show Room 1 and look at the pictures. This is the universe / the Milk way / the sun family / the sun / the earth / the moon.
Question: What do we mean when we talk about the universe?
Step 2. Show slides and say.
This is our home—the earth. We must take good care of it. Because we have only one earth. Our nearest neighbour—the moon moves round the earth all the time. Besides the moon we have the other neighbours—Venus(金星),Mars (火星),Jupiter(木星)and so on.
Questions:
1. How far is the moon from the earth?
2. Has man ever visited the moon?
3. Has man vsited the other places of the space except the moon?
4. What has visited Mars?
Step 3. Show slide and say.
This is a Russian man-made satellite made in 1957.
This is an American man-made satellite made in 1958.
This is a Chinese man-made satellite made in 1970.
Now there are many man-made satellites traveling round the earth.
Question: What are the man-made satellites used for?
(weather report, relay TV programmes, telephone call)
Step 4. Listen to the tape and look at Lesson 46
Step 5. Discussion
Why do we say the world itself is becoming smaller and smaller.
(With the help of the man-made satellites, people in different parts of the world understand better, get in touch with each other easilier )
Consolidation.
1. Do Ex2, 3 in Wb in class.
2. Assign Ex 1 as homework.
Remarks:
If a computer classroom is available, the teaching effect will be more satisfactory by means of CAI instead of the slide pictures.
